Magna Grecia Hoe

The Magna Grecia hoe is a supreme ground breaking hoe. It can also lift out weeds with deep tap roots. When we decided to plant a syntropic forest, we prepared rows of paddock, 4m apart. We wanted each row to be free of grasses and other plants in order to prepare the soil for the trees. Didn’t matter what we came across – couch, kikuyu, purple top, thistles, dock – the Magna Grecia hoe lifted them all. It can even be done without turning over the soil.

Note: The Magna Grecia hoe come without handles. This means they can be sent via Australia Post. Handles are available locally for sale in most good hardware stores. We find that a good long hoe handle works well. For the Magna Grecia, you’ll need a handle with a head that is at lease 8cm x 8cm. You will have to trim a round cross-section down to a square cross-section. You will have to fit the handle yourself, but it is a skill that can be learned fairly quickly with patience. The hoe itself will last a long time, but wooden handles often have to be replaced after several years (less frequently if you keep them oiled) so learning to fit a handle is an investment for the future.
