Anyone who has been lucky enough to be served Rumtopf over icecream will never forget the experience. Looking for another way to preserve fruit to take them through the lean months of the year, the Germans invented the Rumtopf. The fruit of the season was picked and packed in a ceramic pot, the Rumtopf, which has the same name as the desert it produces. To the fruit is added rum (overproof is better) and sugar. When the next fruit is ready to harvest, it is layered on the first fruit until the Rumtopf is full. Then the pot is left until the winter to develop its delicious flavor.

Our Rumtopfs are made in Poland by Zaklady Ceramiczne Boleslawiec in their tableware range. They are of exceptionally fine quality, made out of a pure porcelain clay. Zaklady Ceramiczne Boleslawiec are renown world wide for their beautiful, hand painted tableware so we didn’t think our collection was complete unless we included some of these. Like its simpler slate green cousin, this pot holds 4 L. Unlike its simpler cousin, this pot is hand painted with a rooster pattern and individually numbered – a pot to be treasured for generations.

All ceramics from Boleslawiec are glazed with lead and cadium free glaze as required by the European Union Safety Standards for glazed containers that are to hold food. To comply with the European Standards, they are tested in a scientific laboratory.
